I’ve been thinking about the past lately. Days when I was young, at least half the woman I am now and I had time on my hands. Spending days riding my horse on the beach, chatting endlessly on the phone about nothing (confession: some things haven’t changed that much) and just being me!
In reality of course, given the chance I wouldn’t go back at all. I love having children, being married and owning a house. I am finally a grown up. (I decided that this was true when I discovered my rates were all paid up and my power bill was $600 in credit.) So why am I wistfully obsessed with my memories of the past? Last night I think I worked it out… I haven’t made any new ones in years!
If you are lucky enough like me to have a couple of amazing friends from your past that knew you when you were young, hot and knew everything then you are truly blessed. One of these friends and I decided to drive to Wellington to pick up her car from the airport car park late last night. We chatted about old times and life, to which she told me a funny story about her old car and some engine troubles. I warned her I may have to share that story with all justbeforedinner’s members but little did I know we were soon going to be engaged in an even funnier one.
As soon as she got out of the car a huge gust of wind blew through taking with it her credit card and the ticket that was needed to get the car out of the parking lot! Pitch black and hailing we were searching in vain through the soaking bushes and shattered rubbish. Pulling back branches and picking up goodness knows what. What we needed was a miracle! It didn’t come…
Plan B – reading the rules on the ticket machine we discovered they don’t have a “ticket flew away” option and we would have to go all the way over the airport in the hail to pay there. Bugger that! We came up with a much better plan!
We would try to get another ticket from the machine to get her car out…. um that doesn’t work in case you wondered. Even worse they have cameras that are watching you the whole time….
So eventually we had to go to the airport parking booth red faced and a little panicky that we may be arrested and appear on NZ’s dumbest criminals. Needless to say 10 tickets later, a little poorer and we were each heading home in our own cars.
While my friend was a little upset by the incident I was elated! A new memory! A new story and it’s just about me and my friend. Even better it is funny and it made me laugh.
As woman we are so busy living the everyday, juggling everyone else, helping to build memories for our families that we forget about being the “us” we were years ago.
This week take the opportunity to go and make a new memory for just you. Don’t take the kids, hang out with someone that knows the real you, take chances and see the funny side of a stressful situation. May your memories be new and all your credit cards and parking tickets blow away….Other "Word of the week" articles:
